Ellesmere

St Mary
SY12 0HB   Ramp   WC P in town car parks

St Mary's is an active Anglican church in the picturesque town of Ellesmere in North Shropshire. It has one of the most superb settings in the whole of Shropshire, on a hill above the Mere.

The church has a central tower, one of only nine in the county. The base is Early English from around the 1300sAD, and the upper part Perpendicular, around 1400, with the pinnacles being added or restored in 1904.

The south chancel chapel is part of the Perpendicular structure and its ceiilng has been described by Pevsner as 'one of the finest in Shropshire' with carved beams and bosses. Much of the rest of the church was restored in 1849 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, with other later additions and alterations.

There are some fine stained glass windows and some interesting memorials.
